bilingual Q&A/P&R bilíngue
This is going to be an annoyingly bilingual post (I can only dream of the day there’ll be trilingual texts here too - a blog about learning Welsh in Wales with posts in the language, yay!). Esta vai ser uma postagem irritantemente bilíngue (só posso sonhar com o dia em que haverá textos trilíngues aqui também - um blog sobre aprender galês no País de Gales com postagens no idioma, ê!).
It was inspired by a few brief conversations I had yesterday about my stay in Wales - BTW, it has just given me an idea for another post of the same type. Ele foi inspirado por algumas conversas rápidas que tive ontem sobre a minha estada no País de Gales - e, aliás, acabou de me dar uma ideia para outra postagem do mesmo tipo.
To make reading easier, I’m going to try and use short sentences and not many real paragraphs - so, shall we? Para facilitar a leitura, vou tentar usar frases curtas e não muitos parágrafos de verdade - então vamos?
Q: What’s the population of Wales? P: Qual é a população do País de Gales?
A: I’d said someone had said about 6 million - but I was wrong, it was probably a false memory: it’s approximately half of that. A: Tinha dito que alguém tinha dito uns 6 milhões - mas eu estava errada, era provavelmente uma falsa memória: é aproximadamente a metade disso.
Random comment: Salvador, the capital of Bahia state and the third largest city in Brazil, is said to have about 2,940,000 inhabitants - Wales, 3,150,000. Random comment: My hometown (actually, the town of my heart), in São Paulo state, has roughly 228,664 - the city where I now work and live, also in São Paulo, 674,405. Q: Is Welsh an official language in Wales or just English? P: O galês é língua oficial no País de Gales ou só o inglês?
A: Both are. R: Ambas são.
Random comment: Brazil’s only official language is Portuguese (well, at least when it comes to the nation as a whole). Comentário aleatório: O único idioma oficial no Brasil é o português (bom, pelo menos no que diz respeito à nação como um todo).

Q: Do many people speak Welsh in Wales? P: Muitas pessoas falam galês no País de Gales?
A: Let’s say nearly 600,000 (19% of the population - says Wikipedia), mainly in the north and west (that is, not many in the capital - but this is changing, apparently). R: Digamos quase 600.000 (19% da população - diz a Wikipédia), sobretudo no norte e no oeste (ou seja, não muitas na capital - mas isto está mudando, aparentemente).
Random comment: There are (to my mind) considerable differences between North Wales and South Wales Welsh - and there are (undeniably?) significant differences between colloquial and literary Welsh as well (any version you try to learn will be hard, trust me). Comentário aleatório: Há (penso eu) diferenças consideráveis entre o galês do norte e o do sul do País de Gales - e há (sem dúvida?) diferenças significativas entre o galês coloquial e o literário também (qualquer versão que você tentar aprender será difícil, acredite).

Random comment: On the course I did, there were also, as far as I know\remember, Americans (shwmae, Charles! Shwmae, Liz!), Australians (helo, Ren! Helo, David!), two German women (diolch am fod yno, Genia!... Don't really believe Eef will ever stumble upon this) and a Brazilian one (the writer of these lines), besides the British, of course, and an immigrant muslim mum (I know, what an awful way to describe a woman, a person - I don’t know where she was from, sorry). Q: Why do people want to learn Welsh? P: Por que as pessoas querem aprender galês?
A: For a number of reasons: they’d like to help preserve the language, they’re proud of their family and\or national heritage, they want to become integrated into Welsh-speaking communities, they’re likely to have more and\or better job opportunities if they’re able to speak good Welsh, they happen to be researchers studying minority languages and\or Celtic culture or simply interested in them, they see that as a hobby and\or a challenge, they’re language buffs, they’re fond of Wales… R: Por um sem-número de razões: elas gostariam de ajudar a preservar a língua, elas têm orgulho de sua herança familiar e\ou nacional, elas querem se integrar em comunidades falantes de galês, elas possuem mais chances de ter mais e\ou melhores oportunidades de emprego se forem capazes de falar bem galês, elas por acaso são pesquisadores estudando línguas minoritárias e\ou cultura celta ou simplesmente possuem interesse nelas, elas veem isto como um passatempo e\ou um desafio, elas são apaixonadas por idiomas, elas gostam do País de Gales…

A: On the contrary, it was mostly very pleasant - well, it was cold and a little rainy in the first week or so (end of June\beginning of July), and also at the end, but we had blue sky and warm days most of the time, and even a couple of truly hot ones. R: Pelo contrário, ele estava sobretudo bastante agradável - bom, fez frio e choveu um pouco na primeira semana, por aí (final de junho\começo de julho), e também no fim, mas tivemos céu azul e dias até que quentes na maior parte do tempo, e até uns bem quentes.
Random comment: The first days were just like an average winter day where I’m from, the really hot ones made me feel uncomfortably at home (we had to leave the hostel bedroom door open at night in order to get some sleep then - right, Cecilia?...), and the others, the nice ones, well, they felt exactly like perfect summer days to me. Comentário aleatório: Os primeiros dias foram do jeitinho de um dia normal de inverno de onde eu venho, os quentes de verdade me fizeram me sentir desconfortavelmente em casa (tivemos que deixar a porta do quarto do hostel aberta à noite pra conseguirmos dormir um pouco - certo, Cecilia?...), e os demais, os dias bons, bem, eles se pareciam exatamente com dias perfeitos de verão pra mim.
Not a very ‘literary’ post this time, more of an informative one (sorry if you already knew all of these little facts about Wales - I do hope you’ve learnt something about Brazil, then, or at least had a tiny bit of fun reading the more personal bits of the text and, oh, yes, checking out the photographs). Não foi uma postagem muito “literária” desta vez, e sim uma mais informativa (desculpe se você já sabia todos esses pequenos fatos sobre o País de Gales - espero de verdade que tenha aprendido algo sobre o Brasil, então, ou pelo menos tenha se divertido um pouquinho lendo o bocado mais pessoal do texto e, ah, sim, dando uma olhada nas fotografias).
And one last thing: I’m taking questions (about the main theme of this blog, needless to say) from anyone who might be reading this and would like to contribute to a similar post. :) E uma última coisa: estou aceitando perguntas (sobre o tema principal deste blog, nem preciso dizer) de quem quer que seja que esteja lendo isto e gostaria de contribuir com uma postagem semelhante. :)
